The Ford Explorer Electric brings bold, muscular styling and reassuring road manners to Europe's crowded midsize crossover segment. Yet while it nails ride composure and everyday practicality, a few ergonomic quirks inside remind us of the compromises made under its shared platform.
Taking the Ford Explorer Electric Long Range Premium RWD out onto European tarmac, my immediate curiosity was whether Ford's chassis engineers could inject their distinct DNA into this all-new electric architecture. From the first turn of the wheel, there is a reassuring weight and directness to the steering that feels distinctly purposeful. On undulating country roads, the suspension strikes a confident balance between firm body control and everyday bump compliance, avoiding the brittle floatiness that haunts several competing crossovers. Inside, the cabin design takes an assertive departure from Ford's traditional combustion switchgear. I was greeted by an expansive floating central touchscreen that tilts to reveal a clever lockable storage cubby behind it. Material quality on the upper touchpoints feels solid, and seat comfort over prolonged stints behind the wheel proved excellent. However, the heavy reliance on haptic capacitive controls across the steering wheel and climate interfaces left me longing for physical, tactile buttons, especially when trying to make simple adjustments at speed. Practicality remains a strong selling point. The upright, squared-off roofline translates into generous headroom for rear passengers, and the boot space easily swallows family cargo without odd intrusions. Rear-wheel-drive traction feels assured in daily driving, offering composed power delivery when merging or overtakes demand prompt response. My verdict? The Ford Explorer Electric delivers the handsome proportions, confident handling, and cruising refinement modern buyers expect from the blue oval. It isn't entirely free from interface frustrations, but it proves that Ford can build a cohesive, practical electric family hauler that stands comfortably on its own four wheels.
