Ford's new all-electric Explorer delivers a remarkably composed ride, distinctive exterior styling, and a clever, tech-forward cabin. It strikes a sensible balance between long-distance touring comfort and daily practicality in a fiercely competitive market segment.
After substantial anticipation, I finally got behind the wheel of the European-market Ford Explorer Electric in its Long Range Premium specification. Approaching the car, Ford's design team deserves credit for giving it a bold, squared-off SUV stance that feels purposeful without leaning into excessive aggression. It commands a genuine road presence that cleanly distinguishes it from the crowded field of midsize family crossovers.
Inside, I noticed immediately how much thought went into cabin ergonomics and utility. The centerpiece is the tilting portrait touchscreen, which not only allows you to angle the display against glare but also hides a secure storage cubby behind it. Seating comfort is well sorted, offering generous lumbar support and high seating angles that provide great outward visibility. On the open motorway, the cabin feels quiet and composed, with tire roar and wind turbulence kept thoroughly at bay.
Out on twisty backroads and through urban traffic, the Explorer proves surprisingly agile. Ford has tuned the steering to feel direct and naturally weighted, allowing you to place the vehicle cleanly through turns with minimal body roll. The suspension setup soaks up sharper potholes with composure, avoiding the brittle, overly stiff ride that plagues so many heavy battery-electric vehicles in this class.
My verdict is that the Ford Explorer Electric is a very strong, well-judged effort. While the crossover segment is overflowing with capable alternatives, the Explorer's blend of refined road manners, intuitive cabin tech, and distinct styling makes it a compelling choice for drivers ready to make the switch.
