The Hyundai Inster is easily one of the most surprising compact EVs I have driven all year. Despite its diminutive footprint, its clever packaging and standout modular flexibility completely redefine what a small urban runabout can achieve.
When I first walked up to the Hyundai Inster, its diminutive exterior dimensions immediately stood out, but stepping inside revealed why this might just be one of the most shocking cars we have ever evaluated at IOE. Hyundai has managed to craft a vehicle that looks tiny on the street yet manages to pack an astounding amount of usable space into its frame. It completely sidesteps the cramped claustrophobia typically associated with city runabouts.
The real party piece here is the interior flexibility. I was genuinely amazed by how modular the cabin feels; the sliding and folding seat configurations allow you to adapt the space on the fly, whether you are hauling oversized gear or maximizing rear passenger legroom. The dashboard ergonomics and infotainment interface are refreshingly straightforward, prioritizing everyday usability and clever storage cubbies over needless complexity.
Behind the wheel, the Inster behaves like the quintessential urban explorer. Maneuvering through narrow streets and tight parking garages was effortless thanks to its ultra-compact turning radius and commanding driving position. While it doesn't pretend to be a highway cruiser or a track toy, the suspension does an admirable job soaking up city tarmac imperfections, delivering a compliant and predictable commute.
My verdict is that Hyundai has delivered a masterclass in smart vehicle packaging. If you judge the Inster strictly by its exterior footprint, you'll miss the entire point—it turns everyday practicality into an art form for city dwellers looking to make the leap to electric.
